The organisers of the Ikogosi Marathon have barred human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, from participating in the 2026 Ikogosi 17.5-kilometre race scheduled for Saturday, October 31, citing security concerns.
The Ikogosi Marathon Initiative announced the decision in a statement, explaining that although Sowore had registered for the competition, he was neither issued a race bib number nor cleared to participate.
According to the organisers, the decision followed a review of what they described as independently obtained and verifiable evidence concerning activities involving Sowore and his associates at the marathon’s office premises and elsewhere in Ekiti State.
The Initiative said it considered the activist’s participation a potential security concern that could undermine its commitment to a peaceful sporting environment. It, however, maintained that the decision was based on security considerations and documented conduct rather than Sowore’s political affiliation, beliefs or aspirations.
The organisers reaffirmed their commitment to political neutrality, stating that the marathon, which they said has operated since 2014, does not permit the use of its platform for political campaigns, partisan demonstrations or activities capable of undermining sporting integrity.
They added that Sowore’s eligibility for future editions would be subject to further review, while insisting that the event remains open to participants from all backgrounds who comply with its rules and promote peaceful sporting engagement.
The decision comes amid controversy over alleged attacks involving Sowore and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti. Sowore had accused the marathon organisers and the Ekiti State Government of complicity in the incident and called for an independent investigation and international sanctions. The competing claims have heightened attention on the event and the circumstances surrounding the activist’s exclusion.
