Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called on World Athletics to impose sanctions on the organisers of the Ikogosi Marathon in Ekiti State over alleged attacks on him and members of his team ahead of their participation in the sporting event.

Sowore made the demand in a statement in which he accused the marathon organisers, led by Makinde Araoye, of complicity in what he described as a coordinated attack and an alleged assassination plot against him and his team. He called on the international athletics governing body to investigate the incident and consider barring those responsible from organising or participating in sporting events.

The activist also demanded international sanctions against Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the marathon organisers, alleging that they were involved in the attacks or efforts to facilitate them. However, the allegations remain claims made by Sowore, and an independent investigation would be required to establish responsibility.

Sowore argued that sporting events should provide safe environments for peaceful competition and must not be used as platforms for intimidation or political violence. He said runners and other participants should be protected regardless of their political affiliations.

He further disclosed plans to pursue legal action against the organisers and the Ekiti State Government, while calling for a thorough and independent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged attacks and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable.

As of the time of this report, the statement did not establish the outcome of any independent investigation into the allegations.
