The Federal Government has commenced a monthly cash assistance programme providing ₦50,000 to eligible vulnerable households across the country as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising living costs.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) is a presidential initiative designed to provide immediate financial support to millions of vulnerable Nigerians.

According to the minister, the intervention is aimed at cushioning the effects of global food inflation, which continues to put pressure on household finances. He added that the programme is aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement explained that prospective beneficiaries would receive text messages from the programme’s service providers seeking their consent before payments are made directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

Doro warned Nigerians to be cautious of fraudsters, stressing that beneficiaries would not be required to apply, pay any fees or register through agents to access the assistance. He also advised them not to disclose sensitive banking information, including their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), to anyone.

The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the intervention with transparency, accountability and respect for the dignity of beneficiaries.
