EBOLA SCARE:2027 ELECTIONS COULD BE POSTPONED ,NCDC WARNS

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has warned that the 2027 general elections could be postponed if the ongoing Ebola outbreak spreads widely enough to threaten public safety.
The Director-General of the agency, Dr Jide Idris, gave the warning during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while discussing the possible implications of the disease outbreak for the country’s electoral activities.

Idris, however, stressed that there is currently no need to consider postponing the elections, expressing hope that the situation would be contained before it escalates.
“We hope the election will not be postponed, but if the thing gets wide enough, that might be considered. As of now, there is no need for that,” he said.

The NCDC chief explained that health authorities had been monitoring the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before the disease was confirmed in Nigeria, noting that international travel and the movement of people across borders could facilitate the spread of infectious diseases.

Nigeria confirmed a case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease on October 20, 2026, prompting the activation of emergency response measures, including contact tracing, disease surveillance and infection-prevention procedures.
The development has raised concerns as political parties and their candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections, with campaigns and political gatherings expected to attract large crowds.

Idris, however, dismissed suggestions that the outbreak could be used as a political weapon, insisting that public health decisions would be guided by the severity of the situation.
He maintained that any consideration of postponing the elections would depend on how widely the virus spreads and the level of risk it poses to the population.
The NCDC’s warning does not mean that the elections have been postponed or that a decision to change the electoral timetable has been taken.

Meanwhile, health authorities continue to intensify surveillance and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus in a bid to prevent further transmission.
The 2027 general elections are expected to be a major political event, making the effective containment of the Ebola outbreak particularly important as Nigeria prepares for another electoral cycle.
